Job Description and Duties Under the direction of the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, the Automobile Mechanic will perform skilled work in the adjustment, servicing and repair of automotive equipment.

Maintain order and supervise the safety of persons and property. May instruct, lead or supervise inmate workers. A class "B" California Driver's license is a requirement for this position.


Inspect automotive equipment to determine what repairs are needed to keep the equipment operating in a safe and correct manner.

The performance of the repairs may be with or without the assistance of helpers, apprentices or inmates. Maintain tools and machinery used in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks and construction equipment. Prepare work orders and maintains logs, work reports and other proper documentation of work performed.

Delegate work and supervise assistants and inmates. Inspect work progress and work procedures. Inspect and test completed work. Train and evaluate assistants and inmates on specific job assignments and take corrective action as needed.

Contact suppliers, vendors and purchasing agents for bids on goods and services. Prepare purchase orders for parts and services. Responsible for preparing inmate time cards. Provide safety and on-the-job training to inmate workers.

Attend In-Service Training sessions as required and complete a minimum of forty (40) hours of In-Service Training per year. Minimum Requirements You will find the Minimum Requirements in the Class Specification.
