Remarks:

Common Agenda has been retained by the IEEE to conduct a search for a new Society Executive Director of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS ED).

The RAS ED leads the Society Executive Office in supporting and carrying forward the goals and decisions of the Robotics and Automation Society's Governing Board, Committees, and President.

The RAS ED focuses on developing a strong partnership with the global volunteer leadership and is a consultant to them, providing continuity in strategic thinking and planning.

In supporting the volunteer leadership, the RAS ED drives society initiatives, supports RAS conferences, publications, industry relationships, IEEE and IEEE RAS initiatives, ensures global value proposition for the society members, and acts as a conduit between the society and the other parts of the IEEE.


The ED drives the organizational direction, operating plans, and strategies to meet the goals of the society, while managing all aspects of daily operations - overseeing a $11 Million budget, supporting over 14,000 members worldwide, and managing a staff of 5 employees.

The products supported within the society include meetings & conferences, publications, membership, and professional education. RAS also has a strong online presence and focused marketing function.

Product and program management includes the disciplined use of metrics and a portfolio review process in collaboration with structured product line volunteer groups.

As the leader of an operating unit of IEEE, this post is responsible for cultivating internal partnerships and pursuing operational efficiencies, including the integration of RAS business functions with IEEE business functions when it makes sense to do so.

The Society Executive Director reports to the Managing Director of Technical Activities, partners with the Society President, and coordinates with other Society Executive Directors and IEEE staff leaders.

They typically serve as ex-officio non-voting members of the Society Administrative and Executive Committees (AdCom/ExCom) as well as the Society Committees reporting to the AdCom and ExCom.

Responsibilities Leads and provides broad-based business management for a $11 million global association; Works with volunteers to develop and forecast the annual budget; Responsible for the financial health and diversity of product lines; Accountable for overall financial results for RAS; Works with volunteers to identify, develop, and promote new revenue-generating activities and open global markets for the Society's products, especially those in emerging technologies.

Position is responsible for risk management.

Guides the development and availability of RAS assets so that assets are appropriately archived, quality checked, priced, and accessible to serve a worldwide audience Effectively partners with volunteers to deliver on RAS mission and to support the overall mission of the IEEEFosters member-centric technical communities and extends their reach into emerging technology areas.

Ensure excellence in communications to members and volunteers, as well as staff.
Leads, develops, and supervises up to 5 reports, as well as various temporary hires or independent contractors as required. Manages staff including performance reviews, goal setting, hiring, training, and mentoring.

Ensures excellence in implementation of strategic, operational, and financial planning, determined by the executive and administrative committees of the society; actively provides/seeks advice and counsel to/from volunteers and professional staff leadersLeads Society-wide commitment to positive focus on brand integrity and organizational reputationVisibly leads a Society-wide commitment to legal and regulatory compliance and embodies the highest caliber of ethical behaviorPartners internally with IEEE Entities/Programs and external organizations on strategic initiatives, including Future Directions Initiatives and outreach to new audiences (such as corporations and entrepreneurs).

Helps to mentor other EDs on specific skills and knowledge areas Makes decisions concerning day-to-day business and staff operations, within the authorization limits.
