Job Description and Duties Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Building Trades and the direction of the Electrician III, the Electrician II is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of various types of electrical devices and equipment.

The position is also responsible for maintaining order, supervising the conduct of inmates, and protecting the safety of persons or property.

Typical duties and responsibilities include the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical lighting, motors, heaters, generators, transformers, switchboards, transmission lines, security doors and gates, culinary equipment, electrified fence components, and other electrical apparatus.

Troubleshoot electrical systems; operate electrical power generating equipment; consult and work with other trades personnel; make rough sketches and estimate materials needed for projects; keep records and make reports; lead and instruct lesser skilled assistants; advise in the selection and storage of electrical equipment; draw and interpret schematic diagrams of electrical circuits.


The Electrician II is required to perform preventive maintenance to all electrical equipment, as mandated by the Department of Corrections, to ensure its efficient, continuous operation, with mínimal impact to institutional programs and services.

This includes cleaning, lubrication and inspection of electrical components throughout the institution. Maintains accountability of tools, keys, and power equipment used in the performance of required duties. Performs daily tool checks, completes inventory checklists, and maintains accountability of hazardous materials.


The Electrician II is also responsible for ordering parts and materials that are needed to complete equipment repairs, as well as preparing cost estimates.

The Electrician II will complete paperwork including personal time sheets, inmate time cards, and inmate work supervisor's reports (when inmate labor is utilized).

Maintains accurate records of time and materials used daily in performing equipment repairs.

The Electrician II is required to obtain a combination of 40 hours per year of In-Service Training and On-the-Job Training.

This will consist of Safe Workplace Practices Training in accordance with the established Injury and Illness Prevention Program.

The Electrician II is required to participate in safety meetings, provide safety-related training to inmate workers, and encourage the prevention of accidents and injuries.
