Provides perioperative and operative nursing care to the patient by assessment, planning, treatment, and evaluation. Provides safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, educative, individualized, and goal orientated nursing care to all patients and their families. AGES SERVED Relevant age population(s) served: all ages ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PERIOPERATIVE 1) Assesses and responds to the individual physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of the patient through personal observation and interaction. Acts as a patient advocate.
2) Utilizes professional nursing skills and judgment; takes action to implement nursing care and treat the problems identified. 3) Communicates patient assessments to the appropriate individuals ensuring the coordination of patient care. 4) Demonstrates knowledge of diagnostic measures such as labs, radiology, EKG. Demonstrates skills in IV therapy.
5) Transcribes and implements physicians' orders in an accurate and timely manner while admitting patient to the surgical center efficiently. 6) Documents in the patient clinical records via computer with accuracy and in a timely manner. Checks the required information on the patient record to comply with the correct surgical procedures. Completes final review of patient record to ensure all paperwork and activities such as site marking is complete and that anesthesiologist has spoken to the patient and family.
7) Provides appropriate and knowledgeable instruction/education to the patients and their families. 8) Decrements supplies according to policy. Utilizes supplies, equipment, and resources to contain costs without compromising patient care. 9) Assists with housekeeping duties such as cleaning and making beds as needed for patients.
10) When assigned to PACU, uses knowledge and critical thinking to assess and give appropriate nursing care. Recognizes patients needs; maintains airway, monitors VS, utilizes correct medication to control pain, and consults with surgeon and anesthesiologist if any difficulties arise that effects the patient. Evaluates patient's status using discharge criteria to safely move patient onto Phase 2. 11)ls familiar with the transfer process and procedure to send a patient to the medical center.
12)When functioning as a float nurse, maintains communications between all areas and is available to assist staff as needed to maintain flow; relieves staff for breaks and lunch in a timely manner and utilizes staff in a cost effective manner. 13)Works as assigned in the pain management and eye laser procedure rooms. 14)Familiar with anesthesia supplies; assists with nerve blocks; knows location of crash cart, MH cart, and medications that may be needed in an emergency. 15)Participates in committee meetings, offers suggestions for improvements, and seeks guidance and direction when needed.
OPERATIVE 1) Assesses and responds to the individual physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of the patient through personal observation and interaction, Acts as a patient advocate. 2) Sets up operating room with appropriate sterile supplies, and equipment according to the assignments and schedule. 3) Works as a team with the scrub nurse/technician, anesthesia personnel, and surgeon to provide an organized, safe, and efficient environment of care. 4) Identifies patient and operative site, per policy.
Transports patient safely. Communicates information accurately to the surgical team, and charts it in a timely and accurate manner. 5) Constantly observes sterile field throughout surgical procedure. 6) Charts the required information on the patient record, checks the consent H&P for each surgical procedure, and performs the "time out" properly.
Oversees sponge/needle/instruments counts before surgery, and reports the results to the surgeon after they are completed intra-operatively. 7) Has the appropriate medications available for each case labeled properly and oversees their proper use and labeling on the sterile field. 8) Handles specimen correctly and safely. Labels, records, and places specimens in proper containers, and records the information on the couriers list according to policy.
9) Uses safety goggles and gloves( PPE) when needed to handle waste and soiled items. Ensures that the team also is wearing protective gear. 10) When functioning as float nurse/resource, maintains communication among all areas. Relieves personnel for breaks and lunches in a timely manner.
Assists with checking case carts, maintains the flow of patients according to the OR schedule, and utilizes staff in a cost effective manner. 11) Reviews surgeon's preference cards periodically to ensure that specific supplies and equipment are available for the procedure. 12)Independently gains knowledge and familiarizes self with all equipment procedures, supplies, and drugs, and is familiar with their storage locations. 13)Familiar with anesthesia supplies, location of crash cart, MH cart, anesthesia emergency carts, and locations of endotrach tubes, LMA's, en
