The primary function of The International School of Panama Learning Support Specialist is to facilitate the students learning process and create productive environments in which students can develop skills they might need at present or in the future. He or she provides within the classroom learning opportunities for the students and assists in other school programs working harmoniously with the administrative staff and parents in support of the ISP Teaching Philosophy, school policy, regulations, objectives, and goals. Middle School at ISP: Our primary mission is to meet the unique educational, emotional, and social needs of each and every student who walks through our doors. We accomplish this by providing a rich, holistic experience in a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility. All of the staff members at ISP share a common goal -to do whatever it takes to help our students reach their full potential as learners and as global citizens. We recognize that education is a complex, dynamic process, and we constantly evaluate our practice to ensure that students are engaged, appropriately challenged, and experience joy in learning. We offer a research-based curriculum that emphasizes a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy as well as critical thinking, citizenship, and ample opportunities for creative expression. Our whole-child approach includes a challenging English, Spanish, social studies, science, and mathematics program. Students stay fit and healthy in our physical education classes, they experience STEM, theater, art and music in our exploratory classes, and as a bring-your-own-device school they get hands-on access to technology daily. In addition to these classes, our students are engaged in the social emotional realm through our advisory program, which focuses on academic success, social-emotional well-being, and community building. Our early release time on Wednesdays is devoted to professional development activities designed to continually improve our services to students and families. Education is not static, and our staff understands the importance of keeping up with the latest research regarding effective educational practices. WHAT YOU’LL DO Responsible for maintaining/updating the Resource Program at I.S.P. to best serve students with learning disabilities and/or attention deficit disorders. Assist in the coordination of students who may need special resource assistance (i.e. extra help in the area of math, reading, writing, and study skills). Providing students with special needs the most appropriate program within the academic environment of I.S.P. This can also require contacting/working with outside professionals (neurologist, psychiatrists, psychologist, etc.) Coordinating Student Support Team (SST) meetings for students who have been referred to the special needs program. The SST meets to discuss students that are not performing well academically or socially. The CST is made up of the Principal, Counselor, Teacher Representative, and Resource Teachers. Responsible for maintaining systems for documenting child studies, disseminating information, filing, and the use of these records. Responsible for developing an Individual Educational Plan (I.E.P.) for every student in the special needs program. Responsible for meeting with parents when a student enters the program to discuss the I.E.P. Responsible for completing a full battery of psycho educational tests with students when it is considered necessary and write a detailed educational report. Writing end of the year reports for each student in the program. Teaching and working with students an average of 5 periods a day. This can be an in-class or a pull-out program. Complete other duties as assigned.
