The Position:


Under the direct supervision and guidance of Regional Technical Adviser in Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), the intern will assist in the area of Sexual and Reproductive Health activities including the work on Midwifery and HIV/Aids through collaborative work with UNFPA partners and COs.


Tasks and responsibilities

  • Support the Regional Technical Adviser in the revision of country national work plans and monitoring reports to consolidate and analyse SRH and HIV initiatives.
  • Support the preparation of regional meetings, including interagency meetings (e.g. preparation of concept notes, agenda, draft communications, preparation of minutes, development of reports and oral presentations and power points).
  • Support the preparation of presentations in power point on issues related to SRH, maternal mortality, CSE, HIV and Midwifery.
  • Update relevant regional data in SRH, HIV and midwifery.
  • Undertake scientific literature searches in scientific databases in the area of SRH.
  • Support on other tasks as needed.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Enroled in a University degree, preferably in public health, social development, international relation, public administration, global and development policies
  • Fluency in English and Spanish. An additional UN language would be an asset.
  • Experience with data analysis, statistical packages and other software will be asset.
  • Ability to think and work logically and work precisely with attention to detail.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely in a professional manner.
  • Good organisation skills.
  • Initiative, sound judgement and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members of different national and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment.

Learning Elements:

  • Upon completion of the assignment, and depending on its duration, the Intern should be able to:
  • Increased understanding of the UN system.
  • Understand the UNFPA mandate and policies in Sexual and Reproductive Health and the situation of SRH in the LAC Region.
  • Learning the technical language and working procedures of an international development and Humanitarian Assistance Organisation.
  • Work as a team member in a multicultural setting.

Qualifying for an Internship:

  • Be enroled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master's programme, or higher);
  • Be enroled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor's degree or equivalent);
  • Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within oneyear of graduation;
  • Be enroled in a postgraduate professional traineeship programme and undertake the internship as part of this programme.
  • Students must have written and spoken proficiency in English; fluency in another UN language is an asset.

Financial Aspects:

Interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA.

The costs associated with an intern's participation in the programme must be assumed either by the nominating institution, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students, or by the students themselves, who will have to meet living expenses as well as make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and other requirements.

However, they receive a stipend to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, if not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation, or scholarship programme.

The amount of the stipend varies according to the duty station. In addition, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship. Proof of insurance will need to be submitted before the internship begins. UNFPA does not provide medical insurance for interns.
