Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

Main Purpose of Job:
The British Embassy is looking to recruit a Communications Officer who will play a key role in the Political and Communications Team. The Communications Officer is responsible for delivering the Embassy’s communication and social media strategy and raising the UK’s profile in Panama using a range of media, communication and public diplomacy tools.

S/he will manage and promote the Embassy’s digital media presence, creating innovative and engaging content for the Embassy’s social media accounts, and will lead on the Embassy’s relationship with media organisations. The jobholder will work closely with the Ambassador and collaborate with different colleagues within the Embassy, in London and across the Latin America region on communication campaigns to promote UK priorities and objectives.

This is a fun and interesting role which would suit a proactive and creative team player who is able to flex and adapt to changing requirements. The jobholder will require strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as both the technical knowledge and creativity to produce engaging social media content. A high level of proficiency in both Spanish and English is essential. Previous experience working in the field of social media, media relations, and/or communication would be a strong advantage.

**Roles and Responsibilities**:

- Develop and implement communication strategies (traditional and social media) to promote the British Embassy’s objectives and key messages. Create and manage content and campaigns for all Embassy digital channels: website, Instagram, X and LinkedIn, ensuring content is engaging, accurate, and up-to-date.
- Identify opportunities to promote UK policies and values to Panamanian audiences through traditional media and other channels.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communication campaigns and initiatives, producing regular reports and recommendations for senior Embassy staff
- Draft press releases, website articles, briefings and speeches as required in both English and Spanish.
- Support the Head of Political and Communications Section in developing a strong relationships with media organisations and other external stakeholders and organising events to promote the UK in Panama

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- Excellent writing/drafting skills in both languages (English and Spanish).
- Experience in managing websites and social media (X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram).
- Intermediate to advance graphic designing skills. Experience with graphic design and multimedia production software.
- Intermediate to advanced photo and video editing experience.
- Research skills (assessing various sources, Internet searches).
- Personal drive, sound judgement and attention to detail.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritise.
- Intermediate event planning skills
- Flexible, resilient under pressure and decisive with a proven record of accomplishment of delivering results to a high standard within tight deadlines.
- Proactive, creative and solution minded.
- Strong networking skills.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Bachelors Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Graphic design or any related field.
- At least 2 years of relevant experience in a public relations or communications roles.
- An understanding of UK culture and a desire and interest in learning more about UK politics and its media landscape.
- Working experience in public relations, advertising, event management or journalism.
- Understanding of current affairs / political environment / foreign policy.
