Intern - Environment Affairs: Support to Regional
hace 2 semanas
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The Latin America and the Caribbean Office located in Panama City works closely with the 33 countries of the region - including 16 small island developing States, with a population of about 650 million people. The office works to serve the needs of the region and its activities are integrated into the work programs approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly of UN Environment (UNEA).
The UN Reform of the United Nations makes it mandatory for all agencies to work together under the coordination of the UN Resident Coordination and the Development Coordination office. The Regional Development Coordination (RDC) function in LAC has the task to support UNEPs engagement with the entire UN System in the region.
The overall objective of the Regional Development Coordination Unit is to support the regional office in producing at least six (6) UNEP Country Programmes (using an existing template). There are six (6) countries of the region for which support is required to map UNEPs existing portfolio to the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) in a coherent manner vis-à-vis the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, and to analyze how this portfolio is coherent with the actual ambition of the UNSDCF (United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework).
The Internship is for 6 months and UNPAID. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
**Responsibilities**:
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Responsibilities may vary according to the specific context of the UNSDCF.
Under the direct supervision of the Regional Development Coordinator of the Latin America and the Caribbean Office, the interns will be SUPPORTING the following activities:
1. Management of project and UNSDCF data in coordination with the regional monitoring and reporting officer
2. Producing a debrief of the main content of the UNSDCF
3. Analyzing the CCA and the UNSDCF identifying environmental coherence needs and opportunities for integrated analysis.
4. Mapping UNEPs existing programme of work activities per subprogramme
5. Mapping status of achievement of and trends of country implementation of the Multilateral Environmental Agreements commitments and planned actions.
6. Mapping Key UNCT processes that UNEP supports or plans to support e.g. food system summit follow up, national roundtables, VNR/ NDC support etc.
7. Based on CCA/UNSDCF and UNEPs portfolio analysis, identify areas where synergies can be found with other UN agencies
8. Coordinate with UNEP´s regional Science Division team on mapping the SDG indicators under production where UNEP is custodian agency
9. Conduct secondary data research to support the development of concept notes, proposals, policy briefs or activities.
10. Support the preparation of communications pieces, technical briefing notes, news pieces, draft reports and publications, as necessary;
11. Support the start-up phase of any projects, if required;
12. Assist in the organization of meetings, training and workshops;
13. Support other activities as requested.
More specifically, the job will entail the following tasks:
